	Rambouillet’s castle by the colourful aspect of its architecture, evoke its landscape garden without reaching however the harmonious equilibrium. The building has had, thru the different period numerous owners that have ordered some modifications more practical than aesthetic.

In the 8th century, what was to become the Rambouillet’s castle was more a lodging in the middle of a forest full of (animals). The place got its name from a spring ,the Rambe or also the Rambeuil.

Pepin le Bref (715/768) gives this residence in 768 to the St Denis abbey
Monks. Two and a half century later the forest comes into royal domain.
Rambouillet benefits then from a great grubbing. In the 13th century the parish holds 150 members whose activities are
Very probably in direct relation with forest works. Then , under Charles V (1338/1380), a major middle-class man from paris, Jean Bernier buys for 700 pounds what is then a manor and makes it a fortified castle.

At his death, his son sells the castle to Regnault d’Angennes, first servant and chamberlain of the king. He increases the domain before dying in 1416. Under his two sons reign, jean I and jean II ,the castle will be ceased, plundered and burnt three times by the English.

Later, Jacques d’Angennes, who has been the owner of the castle from 1514 to 1562 receives often the visit of Rabelais (1494/1553, father of Gargantua) at Rambouillet. The 31st of march 1547, François the 1st dies in the castle following a long decease. We say that the king died in a tower which bears his name now, but it is more probable that he was installed in a more comfortable room. The first canals and basins are dug between 1699 and 1704. The owner of the castle is then Fleurian.

The garden also sees itself refitted . Than, Armenonville sells the castle to LouisXIV (1638/1715). Rambouillet comes then to the possession of the count of Toulouse, the last legitimate son of the sun king and madam de Montespan. Huge works are then undertaken. Under the direction of architect Jacques Sarda , two main buildings are erected doubling then the numbers of rooms, and the drawbridge is built. The count receives then the famous court.

The duke of Penthievre, son of count of Toulouse, sells the castle to Louis XVI (1754/1793)who make digging more canals and supplements the installation of the garden. After the revolution, from 1793 the castle is left abandoned for about twenty years. In 1804 on demand of Napoleon the 1st (1769/1821), architect Auguste Farmin makes Rambouillet a rendezvous for hunting and a guest house. The repairing is achieved in 1807.

From 1810, other works are undertook of which the construction of the famous bathroom of Pompeian style. An outdoor balcony between the Emperor apartments and tose of the empress is also added. In 1870, the castle becomes the property of the French state. Felix Faure(1841/1899) makes it the summer residence of the president of the republic in 1886.

In 1944 the 2nd armoured division of general Leclerc (1902/1947) on the road to free Paris passes by Rambouillet. In its silage the town will see Ernest Emingway (1899/1961). The American writer is then war correspondent. If the castle of Rambouillet is not anymore the famous hunting rendezvous that it was under Valery Giscard d’Estaing’s presidency , it is often chosen as the place of reunion for major international meeting.

The Castle of Rambouillet is opened every day (except Tuesday and during presidential stays) from April 1st till September 30th, 2009, from 10 h till 11 h 30 and from 14 h till 17 h.

From October 1st till March 31st, 2009 from 10 h till 11 h 30 and from 14 to 16 h 30 and 15 h 30 for the Laiterie de la Reine and Chaumière aux Coquillages.
